This past Sunday began one of my all-time favorite traditions of the season – Advent. For the last few years I have been intentional about spending every day of the time leading up to Christmas to focus on the real reason for the season. It keeps me grounded and fixed on the most meaningful things in a span of time that can often be overwhelming with the hustle and bustle between shopping for the perfect gifts, wrapping everything just so, baking goodies, cooking comfort food, and entertaining all our dear family and friends. Advent has become an opportunity to slow down and savor; a ritual I not only need, but so look forward to every year.
This year, I am working my way through two studies:
- The She Reads Truth study: Christ Was Born For This, a look into the Old Testament roles of Prophet, Priest, and King, and how Jesus came to ultimately fill each of those perfectly. In my years of bible study, I have so come to appreciate the details, drama, and history of the Old Testament and how it all leads to God providing us “the way, the truth, and the life” – Jesus Christ – God’s amazing gift of freedom to His people. It really is the greatest love story ever told, and unwrapping it even more through the next few weeks, is making for an extra special and beautiful way to start each day.
- The Advent Devotional by Amen Paper Company (previously Naptime Diaries). I absolutely LOVE this yearly devotional series they put out and am SUPER stoked to dive into the theme of ‘Let It Be” over the next few weeks.
I am really excited to see what God reveals and speaks to me as I spend time with Him in His Word and seek His presence through these Advent studies. How I draw near to Him best in these days is with my bible, journal, a big mug of coffee, and wrapped up in my super soft blanket, right next to Christmas tree. The dark, peaceful, quiet hours of early morning are my absolute favorite and set the course for the rest of my day. And come Christmas, I’m filled up with anticipation, ready for all He came to give!
Do you have a special way that you’re celebrating Advent? I’d love to hear how you’re pressing into Him in this season and letting Him guide your mind, heart, and soul as we prepare for His arrival on Christmas day.
May we all experience the “thrill of hope” this most blessed and beautiful season brings!
