A big theme in our lives this year has been “Home Improvement.” My husband, a builder by trade, began working on finishing our basement on New Year’s Day of this year, and it has been amazing to see his creativity and skill come together in a design that provides a wonderful new place for entertaining family and friends. In the midst of him working hard on the large area of our basement, I started pondering the room downstairs that I have been using as a home office. I had been wanting to re-vamp it for awhile because the previous color and furniture weren’t exactly what I wanted for my work/creative space. When I need/want to work on something, I ultimately want to be in a space that I will feel comfortable in for long periods of time, a space of my own that characterizes who I am and what brings me peace and happiness. (Let’s face it, it’s more enjoyable to work when you like the space where the work is taking place.) So, I took a lot of notes on things I definitely wanted to see changed in this room, and really thought about the purpose of the space and how I could best maximize its usage.
It turns out that right about this time, my husband was taking a little break from the actual physical work on his “man-cave” because he had come to that point in the process of designing the sports bar area. My husband, much like me, is a perfectionist and was taking his time to do the research, estimating, etc. So, one night over dinner I proposed to him that maybe while he wasn’t working on building anything in “his” part of the basement, that he could assist me in remodeling the home office. And although it wasn’t his main priority, being the great man that he is and recognizing my desire for a little place of my own, he made my dream a reality. (I love him so much!)
Thanks to my hubby, Sherwin Williams, Ikea, and Target, I now have a fabulous place to work, write, read, relax, and be creative. I LOVE IT! I think all of us need a spot in the safety of our home where we can go from the outside world and focus on those things that help us be our best selves. For me, this improved office space does just that! Everything from the color, the set-up, the furniture, and accent pieces characterize who I am and what energizes me! I so look forward to using and enjoying this space to it’s fullest!
